WARNING!!! MENTIONS OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABUSE, TRAUMA, MENTIONS OF SUICIDE, AND VIOLENCE!!
Bungou Stray Dogs is a manga/anime series centered around characters named after famous authors (but with otherwise no relation) who possess supernatural powers known as abilities (named after their works or things related to the author). Most of the series takes place in or around the city of Yokohama, Japan, and explores the conflicts between the Armed Detective Agency (the “good guy” ability users), the Port Mafia (the “bad guy” ability users that are, in fact, criminals), and the Guild (a North American organization of ability users with a hidden agenda revealed later in the series). The main protagonist of Bungou Stray Dogs is a boy named Atsushi Nakajima, and it’s from his eyes that we begin the story.
Atsushi Nakajima appears to be a normal, down on his luck kid; abandoned by his parents as a toddler, he grew up in extremely terrible conditions in an orphanage near Yokohama, Japan. While the other children are also mistreated, Atsushi gets the brunt of it all, and he has no earthly idea why he’s mistreated so badly; the other children use him as a scapegoat, going so far as to pin the blame of every little thing that goes wrong in the orphanage on him. At one point he’s accused of stealing candy and severely punished, even though he was completely innocent of any wrongdoing, because the headmaster sees him as a troublesome child that has no place in the world, so of course Atsushi is the guilty one.
Obviously this leads Atsushi to question why he’s the one made to suffer like this, and the answer lies with a hidden ability that he’s had since birth. At night, unbeknownst to even himself, he turns into a massive weretiger that rampages throughout the city and countryside, devouring crops and causing wanton destruction. Because of this he’s severely abused by the headmaster of the orphanage, who seems to be the only one aware of his secret. Strangely enough he’s allowed to stay in the orphanage despite this, but is at one point caged, beaten, injected with sedatives and starved nearly to death, all because of an ability he has absolutely no control over.
Atsushi often spent time in the library to hide from the headmaster, and thus became fascinated with books. Losing himself in them helped him escape some of the harshness of reality.
At the age of eighteen Atsushi is finally kicked out of the orphanage after being told that he's too old to stay and that he has no place in world, and he’s left without even the basic necessities needed to survive on his own. Despite the severe abuse and physical trauma, Atsushi remains kind and optimistic, even while on the brink of starvation. He eventually wanders to a river near the town of Yokohama, weak and delirious from hunger, and though he’d been told to just go die in a ditch somewhere by the other orphans, he refuses to give up, living almost out of pure spite. However, though it goes against his morals, he realizes that he’ll have to steal in order to survive, and that’s when he makes up his mind to pickpocket the next person he sees, even if it’s wrong, because he must live and prove the others wrong.
Except…the next person he sees…is a man drowning in the river…
Atsushi is reluctant to risk his own life to save a stranger at first, but only for a split second. We soon see him diving in to rescue the mystery man, who it turns out was trying to commit suicide, and is none too happy to be rescued. However, because he got Atsushi mixed up in such a mess, the stranger feels that he owes Atsushi a favor, and seeing that the poor boy is nearly starved to death, treats him to as much food as he can possibly eat, much to the chagrin of his strict, no nonsense coworker who happens upon the scene.
The two men then reveal that they are detectives for an organization called the Armed Detective Agency, which deals with special cases involving individuals possessing supernatural powers called Abilities. It turns out that every single person in the ADA is an ability user, including the man that Atsushi saved from drowning; Dazai Osamu. Their current case? Figuring out where the notorious weretiger will strike next. Atsushi is terrified at the thought, because he believes that the tiger is after him, and follows him wherever he goes. He wants nothing to do with the case, but after the promise of a hefty reward from the ADA that could solve his hunger problems, he reluctantly agrees to accompany Dazai on the case (as bait, since the weretiger “follows” him everywhere).
Of course it’s revealed that Atsushi himself is the weretiger, and after being called out by Dazai, the beast emerges and puts up a fight. Finally, after being subdued by Dazai’s ability “No Longer Human”, which nullifies all other abilities with a single touch, Atsushi wakes up to face the truth, and is greeted by the other members of the ADA, including the president, Fukuzawa Yukichi, who’s ability “All Men Are Equal” keeps the abilities of anyone under his influence in check. This is what finally allows Atsushi to begin to gain control over the beast within.
After a trial to determine his worthiness of joining the ADA, Atsushi is finally accepted and has a place to call his home.
Of course, such a strong and terrifying ability is bound to attract attention, and the seedy Port Mafia that controls the underworld of Yokohama has set out to claim a bounty put on Atsushi’s head by the leader of a North American organization known as “the Guild”. Because of this Atsushi runs into several ability users after his bounty, and is forced to fight to keep out of their clutches despite his peaceful nature.
It’s from here that the series truly picks up, and we see Atsushi endure many trials and tribulations in his journey to accept the beast within and help others who cannot help themselves.
CANON PERSONALITY:
WARNING!!! MENTIONS OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABUSE, TRAUMA, AND VIOLENCE!!
Atsushi is a very complex character in terms of personality; at the beginning of the series, we see his struggle to survive, and the internal conflict he experiences regarding being a good person and doing the right thing versus doing what he must to survive. His determination to live drives him to drastic measures, and though he could very well starve to death, he waits until he’s collapsed from exhaustion to resort to pickpocketing. Hurting others on purpose, even with something as minor as stealing a meager amount of money, is unacceptable to him. Despite the cruelty he’d experienced at the hands of the headmaster of the orphanage and the other children, he never becomes cynical or jaded.
However, Atsushi’s main drawback that keeps him from reaching his full potential is his almost non-existent self-esteem and constant feelings of worthlessness. Being told that he’s a burden and has no place in the world over and over again took its toll on him, and even when he’s repeatedly saved others from certain death, he still wonders if he could’ve done more. He's prone to bouts of despair when things seem rather dire, and sometimes needs a bit of a talking to to snap out of it. He feels as if he doesn’t truly belong anywhere because of who and what he is, and Dazai points out to him several times that “feeling sorry for yourself will make life an endless nightmare”. Though he’s reluctant to accept that fact, eventually Atsushi does grow and learn to accept himself for who he is, as well as the beast inside him. He realizes that his ability can be used to help instead of hurt, and that motivates him to become even stronger.
He starts out fearful and cowardly, running at the mere mention of the weretiger, and he’s reluctant to do anything to attract attention to himself for fear of being punished for it. He does eventually grow a spine, however, a change that was put into motion by gathering his courage and saving Dazai from drowning. Saving others is the main motivation that Atsushi has for putting himself in danger, and at several points in the series he jumps directly into the line of fire to shield others from harm. This extends to his enemies as well, and at one point he endures grievous injuries to save a young girl from harm despite her trying to capture him for the Port Mafia.
He refuses to accept the notion that people are bound by fate, and that if a person has done bad things that they are forever a bad person. Atsushi is a firm believer in change, and while he does his best to accept people for how they are, he will speak his mind if he thinks that something is wrong with what they’re doing. The most intolerable thing for him is to see people used as tools, and he’ll fight for their freedom just as strongly as he’ll fight for his own, even if they're on opposite sides.
When Atsushi reacts, he reacts massively. Despite his usually peaceful nature, he can become extremely angry when pushed too far, or when thinking back on his abusive childhood. He can also be a bit judgmental of his coworkers' (and others) actions, especially when they involve shenanigans that have nothing to do with their assigned task. He's extremely expressive and isn't afraid to show it, and he'll definitely speak up, even to those higher in rank to him, if they're being ridiculous. He'll question orders that he personally disagrees with, but usually compromises and obeys them as best he can. He's a bit preoccupied with proving his worth, and letting people down always makes him feel terrible, so he tries his best to avoid it.
He does his best to avoid a fight, but is usually forced into one anyway by other ability users. Even when his own life is in danger, however, he is extremely reluctant to kill anyone, and it's gotten him in trouble more than once. He really does just want to live and let live, but being a detective in the ADA doesn't exactly allow him to be complacent. He tends to do his best to work well with others, even if they treat him badly, because getting the job done, and doing it well, is extremely important to him.
He’s selfless to a fault, and at one point is determined to leave the ADA behind to ensure the safety of his coworkers when the Port Mafia threatens to bomb the office building if they don’t hand over the prized weretiger. The way he sees it, the bounty is on his head, and if he leaves, then the Port Mafia and the Guild will have no reason to attack the only place he’s ever felt like he belonged, and the people that feel like family to him. He’s willing to give up his own happiness and sense of belonging for the sake of his coworker’s safety, because he feels that no one should suffer because of him. He will break the cycle of the weretiger bringing misfortune wherever it goes.
Though he's got terrible self-esteem, he often stands up for himself and speaks his mind when someone is putting him down for who he is or outright insulting him. Even if deep inside he thinks he might deserve the abuse, he no longer simply sits back and takes it like he did when he was small and helpless.
Despite his less than stellar childhood, Atsushi remains a kind and selfless soul throughout the series, going so far as to risk his own life to save others on a regular basis. His real faults lie within his own lack of self-worth, and though he’s determined to live, we seem him struggle to find his place in the world even after being accepted into the ADA. That doesn’t stop him from being cheerful and helpful, however, and he takes every chance he can get to enjoy life and all its simple pleasures (especially food). He is, however, extremely frugal because of his upbringing, and unfortunately others seem to stick him with the bill more often than not.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Beast Beneath the Moonlight: Atsushi’s ability to turn into a massive white tiger. In the beginning he has little to no control over his transformations, but after joining the ADA and coming under the influence of the president’s ability All Men Are Equal, he’s able to transform different parts of his body at will to enhance their strength. So far we’ve seen him change his arms and legs to tiger limbs, and Atsushi’s facial features also tend to turn more feline while under the influence of the tiger. He can even summon a prehensile tail with an incredible strength of its own that can be used to fight or hang on when he’s about to fall. Of course, he can also transform into the full tiger, but he seems to still have difficulty controlling the beast at its full strength, so he tends to stick with just the limbs during most confrontations.
Regeneration: Part of the weretiger’s influence. Atsushi has the ability to endure fatal wounds that would absolutely decimate a normal human being, such as his leg being severed from his body, being impaled several times over, being slammed into walls at high speeds, and enduring hits from other abilities. His ability to regenerate is also fairly rapid, allowing him to get up from near fatal blows in minutes. His severed leg was fully regrown overnight, good as new, much to everyone’s awe. However, despite this ability, he still bears several scars and burn marks from his childhood, so it’s unclear as to how scarring works with this ability.
Speed: Atsushi is incredibly fast when under the influence of the weretiger, and at one point is able to keep up with a speeding minecart. His powerful limbs seems to be the source of his speed as well as his strength.

AU NAME: Atsushi Nakajima
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: His hair is black instead of silvery white, and his eyes are a deep, rich brown instead of having segmental heterochromia of gold/purple. His body is also a bit more filled out and lacks the brutal scarring from his canon history. Also, obviously, he doesn't have the ability to turn into a giant tiger, nor regenerate lost limbs.

His body is also a bit more filled out and lacks the brutal scarring from his canon history. Also, obviously, he doesn't have the ability to turn into a giant tiger, nor regenerate lost limbs.
AU HISTORY:
• Atsushi Nakajima was born in Yokohama, Japan, to a young, single mother who did her very best to care for him, but when he was three years old she passed away from illness, leaving him in the care of his aunt, who cared very little for her sister or her child, and only took him in out of obligation.
• As a result of having the responsibilities of a caretaker thrust upon her so suddenly, Atsushi’s aunt was deeply resentful, and thus treated him as a burden, and even told him that he nothing but a bother on several occasions.
• Eventually, at the age of five, Atsushi was caught up in an incident with several other neighborhood children, and was accused of stealing food. He wasn’t the one at fault, simply at the wrong place at the wrong time, but this proved to be the last straw for his aunt, and Atsushi was then put into an orphanage.
• He bounced around foster homes for several years, never truly feeling like he belonged anywhere, because misfortune seemed to follow him wherever he went, and the various caretakers would find any reason to put him back into the system.
• He was a shy and awkward child, and therefore an easy target for bullying from the other children. He was often referred to as “Atsushi the crybaby” because of how often he burst into tears.
• When he was seven years old he was adopted into a family with several other siblings and an older brother, Theodore Leonhardt (
lienhearts), and was very happy, but unfortunately his adoptive parents died in a car accident, and he was put back into foster care when extended family wanted nothing to do with him.
• His most steady foster home lasted for a year, and at the young age of eleven, Atsushi began doing odd jobs such as newspaper boy, delivery boy, etc. to gain his independence and give himself a purpose, while also earning himself a bit of spending money.
• One day while out on a route Atsushi happened upon an older gentleman getting mugged, and though he could’ve very well ended up injured or worse, Atsushi intervened, and the thugs ran off upon being discovered.
• The man turned out to be the owner of a local bakery, and was extremely thankful to Atsushi for saving him. He offered a reward, but Atsushi asked for nothing in return. However, his stomach disagreed, and upon seeing how scrawny Atsushi was, the man took him to his bakery and fed him bread and sweets as thanks.
• They became fast friends, with Atsushi popping by to help around the bakery in exchange for food and conversation. He learned to bake breads, sweets, and developed a talent for decorating cakes, and for once in his life Atsushi felt at home.
• Upon learning that Atsushi was an orphan, the bakery owner decided that it was only natural that he should adopt him, and from the age of eleven to the age of eighteen Atsushi lived in his apartment with him above the bakery as his assistant.
• Though Atsushi was finally happy, he simply couldn’t forget about his own experience in the foster care system, and how lonely and isolated he’d felt for most of his life. He’d always wished that someone would’ve taken the time to listen to him and shown some care and sympathy, and those experiences led him to want to pursue a degree in social services so that he could make a difference in the lives of children in the system.
• After doing some research, Atsushi discovered Recolle, a promising city with plenty of opportunities for him to achieve his dream while also being independent. He arranged a tour there, and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere and the friendly people.
• His adoptive father helped him get an apartment near the campus of Recolle University, and now Atsushi lives on his own as he focuses on his studies and his part-time job at a bakery.
AU PERSONALITY:
• Atsushi is still a very sweet, kind young man who goes out of his way to help others. Working at bakery makes him happy because he gets to put smiles on peoples’ faces with sweets! He’s also much less suspicious of people, because he hasn’t been tricked or taken advantage of quite as much as his canon counterpart.
• His self-esteem is still pretty abysmal, but he remains optimistic and tries his best. Giving up simply isn’t an option after his father figure had helped him get back on his feet.
• Atsushi isn’t nearly as scrawny here, because while he’d bounced around foster homes, he was never literally starving on the streets. He’s much more lean muscle than skin and bones. He also lacks the scars from the horrific abuse he’d suffered in canon.
• Atsushi doesn’t know the first thing about fighting, nor does he throw himself headfirst into danger quite as often as his canon counterpart. He simply has no reason to fight. He just wants everyone to get along.
• He is still very determined, and an extremely hard worker. Just like his canon counterpart, he enjoys books as a form of escape when he’s particularly stressed.
• He’s every bit as much a glutton as he is in canon as well, stuffing his face whenever he gets the chance. He’s also skilled at baking and decorating cakes, but not so great at cooking savory food.
• He’s still a bit fearful about certain things, especially anything related to the occult. He’ll do his absolute best to avoid conflict, because the idea of fighting someone is just a little bit terrifying.
• He’s still extremely expressive and reacts to things with an often overwhelming amount of emotion.
• Despite not wanting to fight, he will definitely jump in if someone’s life is in danger, often acting with his heart instead of his head.
• Atsushi lacks the suppressed anger of his canon counterpart, and is much more likely to forgive and forget when someone treats him badly.
• He’s not very good with technology, but he knows how to use a phone well enough. Messing with settings, though? Forget it.
• He adores animals, and is especially drawn to tigers.
• He’s extremely curious, and will often investigate things and ask a million questions when given the chance.
• He’s very respectful of others, and often adds on honorifics when addressing them out of habit.
• Atsushi Nakajima was born in Yokohama, Japan, to a young, single mother who did her very best to care for him, but when he was three years old she passed away from illness, leaving him in the care of his aunt, who cared very little for her sister or her child, and only took him in out of obligation.

• When he was seven years old he was adopted into a family with several other siblings and an older brother, Theodore Leonhardt (
